Alloying

Alloying:

Bonding two or more metals together to create improved properties (e.g. Duralumin)
  • Heated until both metals are liquid and then mixed together before allowing it to cool
  • Large proportion of metal melted first

Advantages Disadvantages
  • Improved properties
  • Different Alloys have different advantages, refer to Materials - Metals for more information
  • Different melting points of metal can cause one metal to boil away
  • Different Alloys have different disadvantages, refer to Materials - Metals for more information

Examples of Alloys:

  • Steel (all types) - Iron, Carbon
  • Brass - Copper, Zinc
  • Bronze - Copper, Tin
  • Duralumin - Aluminium, Copper
